RSS backed by Microsoft

Dave Winer of Scripting News in a new Davenet:

Yesterday, out of the blue, I read on Tim Ewald's weblog (he works at Microsoft) that they were supporting a format that I co-authored, RSS. I have been asking Microsoft to support this format for years. As I clicked on the link to one of the feeds, I held my breath. Would they support the spirit of RSS as well as the spec?

This is great news. If you're not up on RSS, I have a backgrounder on the subject here.

Fired LA Times photog comes clean

Poynter's Kenny Irby analyzes the brouhaha surrounding the photoshopped news image that ran in the LA Times Monday. And now we get photographer Brian Walski's side of things.

In an e-mail to the entire photography staff of the Times, Walski admitted his lapse in judgment and accepted responsibility for it. In his 214-word apology, he writes, in part:

This was after an extremely long, hot and stressful day but I offer no excuses here. I deeply regret that I have tarnished the reputation of the Los Angeles Times, a newspaper with the highest standards of journalism, the Tribune Company, all the people at the Times and especially the very talented and extremely dedicated photographers and picture editors and friends that have made my 4 and a half years at the Times a true quality experience.

I have always maintained the highest ethical standards throughout my career and cannot truly explain my complete breakdown in judgment at this time. That will only come in the many sleepless nights that are ahead.

Investor pain was consumer gain

Wired News: Investor pain was consumer gain. Just because technology companies as a group have flopped as profit makers doesn't mean the industry failed to produce valuable innovations, says J. Bradford DeLong in Wired magazine.

We don't yet know what profitable new firms and industries will be built on the bones of the dotcoms and telecoms. The number of people who say TiVo has changed their life makes it likely some form of true video-on-demand, at pennies per picture, will be among these new businesses.
